Band Names: Led Zepplin

Led Zepplin are rock legends. You've heard of them, but do you know how the band name came to be?

In August of 1968, Jimmy Page invited Robert Plant and John Bonham to join him and John Paul Jones to tour Scandinavia in September. At the time they were using the name "New Yardbirds". It wasn't until they released the first album that they revealed the band name as "Led Zepplin".

Jimmy Page tells the story that the name came from just before that first tour while he was trying to start a supergroup with Jeff Beck, John Entwistle, and Kieth Moon. A comment made by Moon about the project would go down "like a lead balloon" was where the band name begins. Page turned the dial up on the size of the balloon, to Zepplin, and there you have the origin of the band name Led Zepplin.
