Band Names: Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots are known for a number of huge hits like "Plush", "Interstate Love Song", "Dead and Bloated", "Big Empty", "Sex Type Thing", and "Vasoline". They also like to go by the acronym "STP". But how on earth did they come up with the band name?

When the band formed in 1989 they called themselves "Swing" before trying out the name "Mighty Joe Young" which they had to scrap when they learned it was already being used. The band all grew up loving the STP oil stickers – frontman, Scott Weiland, had one on his bike as a kid – so they decided to use the STP acronym. It still had no meaning so they tried out various names, including "Stone Temple Pirates". Eventually, they settled on "Stone Temple Pilots" before releasing their debut album "Core" in 1992.
